Pink Sandstone for the Pink Stone Challenge 2023

Pink has become a symbol for Breast Cancer Awareness. It’s a cause that affects so many women and their loved ones. On LinkedIn, there’s an ongoing campaign for October 2023 with the hashtag #pinkstonechallenge2023, and it’s terrific to see the natural stone industry coming together to spread awareness. We’re not participating in any competition, but we want to do our part by showcasing the famous pink sandstone from India. This is our way of honoring the women diagnosed with breast cancer. Thus, we show our support for the cause.

“The Pink City, Jaipur, wears its heart on its sleeve, blushing every shade from salmon to fuchsia, depending on the time of day.”

Lonely Planet

The planetary processes by Mother Nature crafted natural stones, a remarkable creation that took millions of years to form. Geologists have categorized natural stones into primary igneous, secondary sedimentary, and metamorphic rocks. These rocks have endured some mass extinctions that have occurred on our planet. Sandstone is a sedimentary rock that we extract in solid block forms or layered sheets.

Pink Sandstone colour is due to the mineral composition:

Most formations of natural stones contain mineral impurities that contribute to their unique and varied appearance. Pink is a predominant color found in many types of natural stones. During the planetary processes, earthy color impurities in brown, red, and pink result in the pink color hues in natural stones. The presence of these impurities significantly impacts the properties and characteristics of natural stones, making them one of the most versatile and beautiful materials available in the world.

We have seen many stunning natural stones in the ongoing Pink Stone Challenge. Manufacturers and traders have displayed the following:

  • Marble: The participants displayed vitreous and translucent polished marble slabs in an array of pink hues. They also showed some solid pink marble hand-worked on natural surfaces.
  • Granite: Some granite varieties are entirely pink or have predominant pink streaks or flowers (porphyry). Processors and traders showcased them in polished slabs, flamed, and other exciting surface finishes.

Rajasthan state, the center for Indian sandstone:

Sandstone is a popular building material in India. The State Governments of Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh offer considerable areas for quarrying sandstone in their respective states. Pink Sandstone is the most prevalent among these states, where various types of sandstone are quarried. Jaipur, the capital of Rajasthan, is especially well-known for its use of pink sandstone in constructing its buildings and monuments, a tradition that dates back to medieval times. Therefore, we know Jaipur as the Pink City.

Additionally, architects and designers in Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh and those in the adjacent National Capital Region of New Delhi and the neighboring states of Haryana and Uttar Pradesh prefer to use pink sandstones and their derivatives in their construction projects. From intricately carved temples to grand palaces and forts, Pink Sandstone and its variations have lent a unique identity to the architecture of northern India. Therefore, it is the perfect material for building exteriors and landscaping. After all, as the NCR is located close to these quarries, the Government of India used Pink Sandstone to construct the New Parliament Building.

Lastly, the author’s late mother had been diagnosed with breast cancer. After surgery and treatment, she survived for seven years. Finally, she had pancreatic cancer; this time, she was not lucky as the disease metastasized rapidly. Therefore, we suggest that ladies over forty should go for tests regularly. If, upon diagnosis, you undergo treatment for breast cancer, please continue to have general check-ups for cancer. The cure may not be total so that the disease can strike back. We hope there will be a complete cure with advances in medical technology. Thus, for your good health, all you need to do is have regular check-ups.
