Granite is a coarse-grained plutonic igneous rock formed by the crystallization of magma or lava below the earth’s surface. Minerals such as quartz, feldspars, and plagioclase are the basic composition. It is typically light in color and has a granular texture.

Geologists and Mineralogists accept this definition of as a definition of this rock type. However, the natural stone trade has a broader classification that includes almost all igneous rocks, whether plutonic or volcanic, as granite. Plutonic rocks of varying composition, like gabbro and dykes, are under this category. This classification has also included volcanic rocks like basalt.

While granite is known for its high silica content, the feldspars and plagioclase give it its unique properties. They are one step lower than silica on the Mohs scale of hardness. These minerals are the predominant components in these natural stones. Their properties make it suitable for various construction and decorative purposes. Therefore, it is essential that the materials we classify as granite perform as such on the same scale as its main constituents, i.e., feldspar and plagioclase.
